Biography

Gianluca Piombo (b. 1995) is an Italian composer, pianist and conductor.He graduated in Composition with highest honours, distinction and special mention from the “A. Buzzolla” Conservatory in Adria, where he studied under Cristian Carrara. He also earned diplomas in Piano and Orchestral Conducting from the “A. Pedrollo” Conservatory in Vicenza, studying with Giancarlo Andretta and Pierangelo Valtinoni. As an Erasmus+ scholarship recipient, he spent a period of study at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, where his teachers included composer and jazz pianist Włodzimierz Pawlik.

In 2026, he composed Impressioni Marchigiane – Symphonic Prelude commissioned by FORM – Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana. That same year, as part of the 59th Opera Season of the Teatro Pergolesi in Jesi, he wrote both the music and libretto for the musical fable Le peripezie di Pinco Pallino, based on a story by Mario Pompei and commissioned by the Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini in co-production with Orchestra Senzaspine.In 2025, the opera Nozze con delitto, commissioned by the Fondazione Teatro Coccia and co-written with S. Santoni and M. Sarcinelli, was premiered. In the same year, he composed the symphonic poem Tales from no go zone for the FVG Orchestra, which received an Honorable Mention at the second edition of the Brusa Foundation Award.In 2024, he won the Composition Call of the 13th edition of the Guido Cantelli International Conducting Prize with Variazioni Sinfoniche. The work was performed by the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano as the compulsory piece of the competition at the Teatro Coccia in Novara. The same score also received an Honorable Mention at the first edition of the Brusa Foundation Award.As a musicologist, he collaborated with Cristian Carrara and Marco Attura on the critical edition of Gaspare Spontini’s opera Alcidor for the Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini, presenting several arias from the work in their first modern-day performances.He has worked as a répétiteur on opera productions at the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza, the Teatro Pergolesi in Jesi and the Teatro Verdi in Pisa.He is active as a composer, arranger and conductor, with a particular focus on music theatre and projects designed for young and family audiences. These include La bottega di Figaro (after Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Il filtro magico di Dulcamara (after L’Elisir d’amore) and C’era una volta… Giulia, la Vestale (after La Vestale).His works have been performed at major Italian theatres, including the Teatro “Gentile” in Fabriano, the Teatro “Pergolesi” in Jesi, the Teatro “Lauro Rossi” in Macerata, the Teatro “Coccia” in Novara and the Teatro “Verdi” in Pisa.
In addition to commissions from the institutions and theatres mentioned above, he has received commissions from the Festival Pergolesi Spontini, the Festival della Valle d’Itria, the Dutch National Opera Academy in Amsterdam and the Gioie Musicali International Youth Music Festival.
His works are published by Casa Musicale Sonzogno, Edizioni Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini and Sconfinarte.
